![]() The only way to get better is to practice. What you need is to know yourself well enough, and to spend enough time in your own body, tuning into your own energy, in your own self awareness to know at any given moment whether you need to invite something or someone in (integration) or if what you need is more segmentation. You're not even going to want to do it the same way every time. I'm going to do it the same way every time.”īut the truth of the matter is, you're not going to do it the same way every time. I'm going to follow said rulebook and I'm going to follow it well. This creates some discomfort for people, because boundaries would be easier if you could say, “I'm going to just say no to all of these things. Yet half of the work around boundaries is inviting people to be closer. ![]() Pretty much all of our fears around boundaries are about the distance that we create. When we need to create more space or if things are too segmented, the boundary practice that we need to have in that instance is integration. An act that often creates fear in people.Īs humans, we don't want to feel separated from people. We have to understand that if that slightly left of center spot is our happy zone, sometimes when we need to set a boundary, what we need to do is create more space. This is why work:life balance is so difficult, right? Integration is a happier place for us typically than segmentation. The challenge presents when our lives are largely integrated. So closer toward integration, but not by much. The happiest of people sit on this scale from integration on the left to segmentation on the right, a little bit left of center. If and when our personal energy tank is closer to E, a Colin can derail even our best of intentions. If our sense of self, our personal energy is on FULL that day, a Colin won’t have much of an impact.īoundaries are your garlic necklace when faced with an energy vampire. I’ve included a short YouTube video from the show that illustrates the spirit of an Energy Vampire we have all fallen victim to. He’s an Energy Vampire and oh so perfecto! Have you ever watched “What We Do In The Shadows”? There’s one particular character who I simply adore, Colin Robinson. This leaves the door wide open for an unwelcome guest… Enter An Energy VampireĪn Energy Vampire may show its fangs, so to speak, as we’re trying to unwind from work stuff by scrolling social media. Many of us work from home and many of us have one device on which we get all our communications, or we use our computer for both work and personal activities. (Work:life balance is an unobtainable pipe dream in my opinion a focus on life:work harmony is a more worthwhile pursuit.) It is when the lines are less cut and dry, or not fleshed out much at all. I liken segmentation to being cut and dry. But that does not mean it is a good boundary, necessarily. On this scale, segmentation lends to a “strong” boundary. When you look at boundary research, there is a scale that goes from integration to segmentation. It is their flexibility and ability to shift that gives them their strength. The rate at which it falls is proportional to the inverse of the square of the distance.Īs a simple example this means that the signal level of a transmission will be a quarter of the strength at 2 metres distance that it is at 1 metre distance. It can be shown that the level of the signal falls as it moves away from the point where it has been radiated. The concepts used in these calculations are applicable to many other calculations and as a result this is very useful. In the case of radio signal propagation, the waves spread out in three dimensions rather than the two dimensions of the pond example, but it is nevertheless a good way to explain the basics.įree space path loss is a key element of many calculations. The way in which they propagate can be likened to the ripples of waves on a pond that travel outwards from the point where a stone is dropped into a pond.Īs the ripples move outwards their level reduces until they finally disappear to the eye. Here they are considered to travel outwards from the point where they are radiated by the antenna. The free space propagation model is the simplest scenario for the propagation of radio signals. While the equations seem to indicate that the path loss increases with frequency, this is not the full story, as we have explained in our section below. The concept and calculations for free space path loss are not only useful for calculating signal levels for free space paths like those to and from satellites, but also they form the basis of many other calculations as well. Signals reduce in intensity as they travel from the transmitter The way the signal propagates and the path loss incurred provide a foundation for more complicated propagation models.Īlthough in most cases the free space propagation model details the way in which a radio signal travels in free space, when it is not under the influence of the many other external elements that affect propagation. The architects have noted that the GO Home “was conceived as a development model for zero-energy, single-family housing that can be delivered at a cost comparable to that of standard residential construction.” ![]() It became an instant Passivhaus poster child. Simplicity was a driving design principle behind the GO Home, which Matt O’Malia and Riley Pratt of OPAL Architecture introduced 15 years ago. Not surprisingly, most of his clients chose simple boxes, and the designers found ways to little surprises in the vernacular of the familiar.” Tedd Benson of Bensonwood and Unity Homes once shared an anecdote about how complexity adds cost and complication: “Years ago, I met a contractor in Montana who simplified his estimating by charging a set amount for each inside or outside corner. Adding gables and dormers and bump-outs and bays increases surface area and the potential for thermal bridges, as well as the number of materials needed and therefore upfront carbon emissions. Contemporary application of an old building typeĪ square building form maximizes floor area while minimizing perimeter wall surface area and materials, which in turn, reduces upfront carbon. Those corresponding costs include carbon emissions. Each move has a corresponding cost associated with it.” New details are required, more flashing, more materials, more complicated roofing. Every time a building has to turn a corner, costs are added. “‘Dumb boxes’ are the least expensive, the least carbon-intensive, the most resilient, and have some of the lowest operational costs compared to a more varied and intensive massing. Seattle architect Mike Eliason, who learned about this approach to design while working in Germany, used the term “dumb box” to describe simple buildings. Eliason writes about monetary costs, but every word applies to upfront carbon costs too: Back to purity, back to simplicity.”ĭesign innovator Steve Jobs adopted Rams’s philosophy, noting: “That’s been one of my mantras-focus and simplicity. Less, but better-because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. ![]() Rams wrote in the late 1970s: “Good design is as little design as possible. The great German industrial designer Dieter Rams understood the need for simplicity when he was designing stereos for Braun in the 1960s. Simple Forms Are Key to High-Performance Homes This is why there is a growing consensus that an important way to reduce emissions is to use less stuff.Īs an environmental journalist, I tackle this notion of economizing around materials and products by addressing questions like: How much do we really need? How are our buildings constructed and deconstructed? How do we achieve more with less? Here, I will address the notion of keeping things simple to help minimize a project’s emissions profile from the start. While the former might seem like an obvious green building choice, turning trees into lumber comes with its own environmental penalties that include upfront carbon emissions. Integral to building-related efforts is something I term materiality, which is a topic for another day but, in general, concerns materials selection. ![]() There are myriad ways to reduce upfront carbon emissions. Embodied carbon happens before a building is even constructed, so I and many others refer to it as “upfront carbon emissions.” ![]() As our buildings become more energy efficient, the portion of emissions that comes from embodied carbon becomes a more glaring piece of the greenhouse gas emissions pie. These emissions differ from those generated during the building’s operations i.e., operational emissions. The embodied carbon associated with a building refers to the greenhouse gases emitted during the manufacturing of products and materials used to construct it. The last-ditch scheme to get these two to fall in love, to which George signs on, involves Marty sexually assaulting his mother, Lorraine, so his father can be the hero. It sticks out as a mistake and an opportunity missed. But his evolution comes at the expense of pain suffered by the principal female character, whose only positive changes in the new 1985 are reflected exclusively in her weight loss and lack of drunkenness. (The film doesn’t get it all right, indulging in the brown enemy of the day: The Libyan terrorists who seek revenge on Doc Brown, spouting Arabic-sounding gibberish.)īut in Back To The Future, the black busboy and future mayor Goldie Wilson is just an avatar for progress George, in finally standing up for himself and for Lorraine, is the only character allowed to actually progress. The band that plays at the Enchantment of the Sea dance, Marvin Berry and the Starlighters, coolly intimidates the white toughs who call them “spook” and “reefer addicts.” That means more to me 30 years later, when too many Hollywood stories still treat black folks and their lives like racial wallpaper or indulge in stereotype. While the film surely underplays the slights these black men would have likely suffered, those characters aren’t depicted as the archetypal Magical Negroes, either. In a story that primarily centers on fostering one’s own self-confidence, it meant something to me as a boy to see the only folks who looked like me not backing down from anyone or anything. As a PG-rated ’80s sci-fi comedy with a nearly all-white cast the racial realities of Jim Crow aren’t addressed too explicitly, but it is notable that director Robert Zemeckis made sure that the most self-assured people in the film are the few black people who show up in Hill Valley. Even though Back to the Future is set in a small northern California town, Marty travels 30 years back in time to 1955, the same year that Emmett Till was lynched in Mississippi. Marty arrived in a pivotal year, as it turned out. Thirty years on, I still can’t shake the image of a drunken Val Kilmer running over Mare Winningham in “One Too Many.” These stories may have hit with a sledgehammer, but they worked. And even if they embodied the ’80s in their obviousness and tacky dialogue, they were damned effective. The apotheosis of this preachy genre was ABC’s Afterschool Special, which began in the previous decade and hit their stride in the Reagan era.
